| It may not be a disaster movie, per se, but this terminally silly thriller is certainly disastrous, and would be pointless without the novelty of its setting in a flooding Midwestern town during a torrential rainfall. Physically impressive but idiotic in every other respect, the movie pits an armored truck courier (Christian Slater) against a smart leader of thieves (Morgan Freeman) and a corruptible town sheriff (Randy Quaid) who are vying for possession of $3 million in cash. A waterlogged game of cat and mouse, the plot is so contrived that even the most impressive action sequences--such as a jet-ski chase through flooded high-school corridors--are robbed of their already tenuous credibility. Before long you'll be yawning as incompetent accomplices are systematically dispatched by their own stupidity, in the kind of movie where the use of power boats inevitably leads to at least one death by outboard motor. What's impressive here is the physical production itself--the effect of flooding was created by building a huge replica of downtown Huntington, Indiana, in a huge, watertight aircraft hangar in Palmdale, California! --Jeff Shannon |

This movie worked best in the cinema. It's too bad it flopped because the big screen is where it deserved to be seen. Too many folks have seen and critisized this film from TV viewings that do the scope of the action no justice whatsoever.
The action scenes are incredible and this movie is very well made. The bouncing, shaking, wobbling camera was an innovative idea and if you like the slow-motion fire-fights of John Woo movies but hate the gun pornography of trash like Bad Boys II then you'll get a kick out of Hard Rain.
And the music was just totally awesome too. Chris Young's score is the orchestral sound of violence, mayhem and nature taking over. Seriously, it's great stuff and you really ought to get the score CD.
Christian Slater also makes for a better action hero in this than he did in Broken Arrow. Randy Quaid and Morgan Freeman were very good too but I don't think Minnie Driver did a convincing American accent.
Don't be to hard on this film. It isn't supposed to be Citizen Kane. It's a pure action film with the minimal of plot to get in the way.
It was originally called The Flood and had numerous other characters in it and had many daylight scenes. But because of an abundance of disaster movies at the time it was reshot as an action movie that was set totally at night. And practically in real time too.
Sadly the Region 1 DVD is in Dolby 5.1 and is letterboxed at 2.30:1. It's not the best DVD of the film. If you have a multi-regional player then I suggest that you get the Korean Region 3 box set with a beautiful anamorphic transfer, DTS 5.1 and the script book included. |

| a great action, suspense movie with slater, freeman and quaid at each others throats. Freeman steals a million plus from Slater in his armoured car. Then they flip back and forth with where is the money. Betty White is in this movie as well. The one problem is they could of cut out some of the cussing!!!if you have a great DVD player the sound effects will rock your house away in the flood!!Hard Rain was first called "The Flood" before the Studio(paramount) changed it to "Hard Rain"!!! |

| A great, action movie for a Friday night with a likeable cast! Christian Slater is actually a very good choice for this movies' lead. Mainly because he's kind of like an everyman, regular guy like Bruce Willis' character in "Die Hard" (ironic that Hard is in both titles), who's forced into incredible situations. He does the best he can using his wits and cunning along with above average physical strength, without having or using the advantages of huge, bulging biceps and pecs like Arnold or Sly's characters seem to have in equally similar movies. Minnie Driver is at her most beautiful in this one!! If you fell in love with her intelligence, combined with the refined beauty she displayed in "Good Will Hunting", then this is the movie for you!! You should rent it just to see her at her peak of perfection! Her relationship to Christian Slater is very believable and they play off of one another very well. Randy Quaid is a believable sheriff and Morgan Freeman is a decent bad guy but, it's the constant threat of rain and the Dam breaking that gives the movie its constant tension. The action is extremely good and it's just an all-around good flick to watch on a Friday or Saturday night! Highly recommended!!! |

This movie succeeds in many ways to keep the viewer interested. It might be the action or it might be the special effects. Whichever the case may be- it does keep us interested!!!!! Quite a bit unbelievable, but still interesting, the movie will please just about any action movie fan!!! I just recently viewed this movie and it's been out for about 5 years, but I was impressed with it's story and with it's action. It could be classified as a disaster film, but that's not all. It falls into the action/adventure category also. So if you like those types of movies- then see it!!! You will not be dissapointed!!!! This movie also showcases the talents of Christian Slater and Morgan Freeman. Aside from that, it is a WET movie with a lot of HARD RAIN!!!!!! |

| well, when my family started to watch this movie i really didn't want to see it because this isn't my type of movie. i usually like romantic stuff. but i stayed and watched it and i'm so glad i did. first of all, i just loved how everything came together one piece at a time. and second, morgan freeman played his part so well. he is good in whatever he plays. not all actors are like that...for instance rosi perez...she couldn't play a part that is like totally down to business serious really good, i don't think...she's good at what she does. but people like morgan freeman, tom hanks, and bruce willis are soooo good at everything...i think all the people out there with that talent deserve some recognition. WAY TO GO GUYS!!! anyway, the movie is so good, you should see it. |
