| A daffy, adorable, and very funny celebration of DIY spirit, Be Kind Rewind stars Mos Def (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) as Mike, a clerk at a failing video store in a rundown New Jersey neighborhood. When his friend Jerry (Jack Black), who's been magnetized in a power station accident, wipes all of the videotapes blank, the two of them decide to recreate the movies themselves rather than face the store's owner (Danny Glover). The pure charm of Be Kind Rewind can't be captured in that spare plot synopsis. The blend of the movie's great cast (which also includes Mia Farrow, Melonie Diaz of American Son, and Sigourney Weaver) and pitch-perfect writing and direction from writer-director Michel Gondry (director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, writer-director of The Science of Sleep) culminates in a truly delightful movie--sweet without being saccharine, richly comic without irony or sarcasm (which, given the presence of Black, is surprising), sentimental without losing sight of the hard edges of life. Mos Def turns in a standout performance, deeply sympathetic without a moment of grandstanding. An absolutely winning film. --Bret Fetzer |

A lot of movies now-a-days are all about special effects, unoriginal story lines, and repetitive action, it is great to finally see a movie that shows that great movies don't have to include all those. I saw Be Kind Rewind in the theaters, and knew that i would immediately buy the DVD when it came out.
This movie proves that if the story is good, and well put together, people will enjoy the movie. Great family movie (although kids may not understand all the jokes). It's even a great movie to watch alone.
My friends and I are going to get all the movies that were "Sweded" and spend a day watching this movie, and seeing how accurate the "Sweded" versions were. |

I have seen this flick twice, once on a plane and now on DVD. To think that someone would come up with a movie about movies is just hilarious. Jack Black with Mos Def as his straight man is a brilliant combination.
The movie is a little slow at the beginning as each one is getting into character and you are getting the lay of the land with the video store named "Be Kind Rewind," which is way behind the times. You see there are all VHS and absolutely no DVDs. The owner (Danny Glover) goes on a trip leaving Mike (Def) in charge of the store, being told to keep Jerry (Black) out of the store, but he really does not 'get' what he is being told since it is a note written in reverse. This takes on a few minutes of the flick, and is really funny.
Jerry gets a shock of his life, make sure to watch this scene closely when they are both near the fence, and he becomes electrified, causing the tapes to erase. This is where the movie takes off and where we scene the ingenuity of the plot to take off. Sweded is a term they use in the movie that is what they do to make their own version. Like they are making fun of movies like Blair Witch where the viewers really love the new kind of flick.
There is a lot of scenes around Pasaic NJ, although a farce, it is a movie about community and pokes fun of the big movie makers who take things like this way too seriously. Glover does an admirable job as a supporting actor as does Mia Farrow. There are some new faces as well and Jack Black is very funny although somewhat silly at times. The making of the last movie is a lot of fun and fast moving and it brings a lot of the plot together.
If you are looking for a light evening that is really just fun, this is worth it. So, sit back and relax and watch as Passaic NJ gets Sweded. |

This film is everything I expected from the preview, off-base comedy derived from silly interpetations of classic films...with heart.
I almost didn't rent it after the guy at Blockbuster said it wasn't really a "comedy", but he was WRONG! This movie is hilarious! It's more along the lines of Napoleon Dynamite where there are no set-ups or punchlines, the humor is in the quirkiness of the characters and their attitudes.
The "Sweded" movie parodies featuring Jack Black and Mos Def are where the real laughs come from, especially when they just slightly tweak lines and situations from Ghostbusters and Rush Hour 2. This mixed with the characters' faux bad acting and innocence really ups the giggle factor. Mia farrow is also funny as a very realistic weird neighborhood lady who we've all run into at the bank or the supermarket before.
I bought it, you should buy it, your family should buy it and then get one for the dog. |
